This beachfront house burned to the ground in the 1990’s. It was designed in the 1880s by Stanford White of the firm McKim, Mead & White, with site design done by Frederick Law Olmsted. It was one of a group of eight buildings known as the Montauk Association, and now consists of seven houses, the former clubhouse having been destroyed by fire in 1933. The group is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as an historic district.

James Hadley directed the effort to replace the destroyed house. There were no drawings remaining for the house. All dimensions and details were developed from measurements taken from the remaining foundation, from portions of the building pulled from the debris remaining after the fire, and from informal photographs taken by the owners and their friends.
