Shadows was built on 200 acres in 1834 by David and Mary Weeks as their residence and the administrative center for their sugar cane plantation in the Attakapas region of Louisiana. The transformation of this property from typical antebellum plantation house situated in a landscape of work to urban garden on 2 ½ acres parallels the social and economic changes of the times. The site development work included a summary and interpretation of historic research, existing conditions inventory, interpretation of historic conditions, analysis plans for each period, master plan for the garden restoration, phasing and maintenance plans, and recommendations for interpretive visitor sequence. Drawing on Suzanne Turner’s Historic Landscape Report and Catherine Howett’s Interpretive Direction, the Plan relates the changing form of the garden to the social, economic and historic context of the 150 years of its existence, and develops the idea of the 1930’s garden as a garden in the Arts and Crafts tradition. The garden experience facilitates a greater understanding of the relation between landscape and history. As Project Designer at Balmori Associates.
